Do you know the origin of music festival? Tips for 2019 edition in Paris!
The 38th Music Festival returns this year, in order to make people dance to the rhythm of different music on the streets. But before talking about practical information, let’s zoom on the event, its origins and its plan of 2019's edition.
So the first question is, what is music festival? Generally it means organized live performances of singing and instrument playing in the streets, parks and squares of a city. The principle of music festival is to let everybody dance to the music and have fun.
The first music festival is held on June 21, 1982, initiated by the Ministry of Culture and the Minister Jack Lang. He was inspired by Maurice Fleuret, director of Music and Dance, who found that more than five million people were playing a musical instrument, one out of two young people. In order to celebrate and highlight this art and French amateur and professional musicians, a popular event under the name of Music Festival took place for the first time in 1982. The date of June 21 is chosen because it is the summer solstice, the longest day or the shortest night of the year, it's up to you! It also refers to St. John's Day, a former pagan festival, celebrating around a fire.
"Play music, celebrate music" became the event’s slogan in 1983. The festival is entirely free, open to all kinds of music, without hierarchy of music genres, and for all people. Then this modern event immediately brought lots of people to the streets around the music.
Only in France?
The European Year of Music is celebrated in 1985, it is an opportunity to export the festival of music outside France. This event got a huge success even became international. In 2018, more than 120 countries and 700 cities in the world celebrated the music on the streets, like Germany, Sweden, the United States, Colombia ... The event brings people together and spread new music genres around the world.
